The Occultation of a W=13.7 Star for 0.4s by Asteroid (7484) Dogo Onsen

Mon eve May 18, 2026 at 9:24:10pm for Tassajara Creek Rd, Santa Margarita, CA

OWc page

This is a faint event, but follows the ~same path as the more important Hermione #1 moon occultation at 10:40pm, and so will make a nice double occultation trip possible. RUWE = 1.30, which is OK, but not perfect. The nominal path however is high rank, and is for this low numbered asteroid. Only the star position is slightly on the fuzzy side, but odds near the centerline for our sites are still pretty good.

Alt=26 in Santa Margarita, Az=122, (alt=23, Az-117, 20min before in Santa Cruz)        , Sun = -15, from Santa Margarita, in Libra

The latest prediction for Hermione-1 is that the path is more likely centered over Paso Robles. So, our sites for Dogo Osen are free to make use of the higher 26 degree altitude, but Kirk and I must be close so we can pack up and get from here to Airport Rd for the Hermione Occultation in time, 1hr 25 min after the Dogo Osen event.

If we can be packed up and ready to drive 22 minutes after this event, and then its 30 minutes (GoogleMaps) to Kirk's site on Estrella Rd for Hermione-1, that then gives 30 min to set off Kirk, then to my station, and be recording for Hermione-1. That's cutting it very close.

Plan C, which was Adopted for the transition to Hermione-1:  Use Neal Spr Rd for two sites, east of Templeton for Hermione-1. Drive time from Kirk's site at Tassajara Rd is 22 minutes to my spot on Neal Spring Rd. 2755 Neal Spring Rd.

9:24pm Dogo Osen Event
9:34pm I'm packed up
9:36pm at Kirk's
9:45pm - driving
10:05pm - Arrive at Kirk's Site for Hermione-1
10:10pm - drive off towards my site
10:17pm - arrive at my site. Still 34 minutes till event.

I observed from the nook on the west side of the entrance wall to the ranch/home at the top of the small hill I chose and shown on the map. I was not in the driveway, but on the dirt very near on the west side. One car drove over the hill with lights in my direction and obvious on the recording, about 10s before the event. Event itself was not contaminated. I think I saw visually a short dip, but star was quite faint even at 8x, so I can't be sure. Will likely have to combine with Kirk's to confirm whatever we got. I recorded at 8x. Skies were very clear and calm.

I don't see an event. Looks like a miss. But, Kirk's got a suspicious 3 point drop 3s after the prediction. Given the nominal rank, that's a lot, but I have a noisy short dip then too. Is it real? It's lost in the noise, but I'll file this as "miss" "unsure".

Set up on the broad dirt area at the base of Tassajara Creek Rd. 8x. I don't see an event for Dogo Onsen, 8x at Tassajara Creek Rd., south of Atascadero. The target was faint and I had to use at 8x if I wanted to get at least 2 points, even so it was barely above background. I tried several size apertures in PyMovie.  PyOTE said no event could be found.  The PyOTE detectability tool reported an event as short as 0.54s would likely be detectable, 0.42s was predicted max. Probably undetectable, but could have been a miss.

Is that a possible event at :13.41 UT?
