The Occultation of an 11.8 star by the Asteroid Caltech

Sunday evening June 23/24, 2019

This event has mediocre rank, 31% from home, slightly worse at Cabrillo Observatory, and still only 37% on the centerline through Pinnacles National Park. The star is perhaps behind thick interstellar clouds because it seems to be very red. V-R is 1.7; it's 10.1 magnitude in r, so might not be hard to see, even though for some bizarre reason it doesn't show at all on my C2A maps while neighboring stars are there and likely good enough to get me to the target. I'll print the Preston chart to make sure, as well. The drop is complete, but only lasts a maximum of 3.7 seconds, so try to minimize integrations.

Results:

I drove up to UCSC Upper meadow, and successfully recorded a miss. Jerry Bardecker also recorded a miss, on a similar chord just a little closer to the asteroid. There was, so far as I know, just 1 positive chord, of 2.4 seconds duration. The "miss" report is in my folder \astocc. and was sent to IOTA the day after the event.
